ANIMAL SCIENCE

Members must be 9 years old. Meetings will be held on Tuesday evenings, plus occasional Saturdays.

Learn about dogs, their care and training. Will learn agility & obedience training. This will be an opportunity to learn what it’s about for the beginner and people who are interested in going into AKC agility events. Will meet one Monday and one Thursday per month in Springtown. Dog ownership is preferable.

Dog not required. Learn the basics of dog ownership, grooming, and health. Meetings will be from 3:30-4:15 on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month. Members will be encouraged to enter a fantasy pet or poster in fair. Minimal cost; will vary with participation. Ages 5 - 8

Learn the care, feeding, and management of rabbits. Members may raise animals for pets, market, fur, showing, or breeding. Meet 1st Tuesday, Farm Bureau Building, Livermore. Ages 9 and up.

Learn about the care and management of sheep. Members may raise animals for market, breeding or wool. Meet in conjunction with Palomares 4-H. 4th grade and up. Parent participation required.

Learn about the care and management of swine. Members may raise animals for market or breeding. 4th grade and up

Learn about raising, caring for and showing chickens. Hens are approved within city limits, so you can raise them and later show them at the fair. Minimal cost, varies with interest. All ages

You don’t have to own chickens to learn about them, although HENS are allowed within city limits if you are interested. This project will involve members in short creative learning experiences on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. Minimal cost; will vary with participation. Ages 5 - 8

Learn about the care and management of goats. Members will raise animals for market. 4th grade+

ENGINEERING

Learn basic electricity concepts, while doing projects such as a burglar alarm, automatic nightlight, or electronic organ. We will use a tronix kit, which includes reusable parts for over 40 projects. Each member will make a project for the fair. Meet 2nd and 4th Saturdays, beginning in November. Cost $27, ages 11 - 14, limit of 8

Learn age appropriate basic cooking skills. Members will share cost for ingredients. Ages 12 and under, limit of 6

Will watch and learn about foods that grow, like breads, yogurt, and sprouts.

Learn to can fruits (using the water bath method) & vegetables (using the pressure canning method). Learn to dry fruits and vegetables in a dehydrator. Make jams, jellies and something new each year. All ages. Limit of 12

A project for the entire family dedicated to family activities that will include Black Diamond Mine and the Underprivileged Children’s Christmas Party. Pay as you go.

Come quilt with us! Make a quilt of your choice based on your abilities and experience. Learn to choose fabrics, rotary cutting, and sewing techniques. We will also be doing a community service project based on quilting. It is desirable of members have a sewing machine that they can bring to meetings and/or use at home. Members should either have previous quilting experience or be at least 13 years of age. Limit of 8

Learn basics of CPR. Possibility of earning certification. Ages 8 and up, limit of 12

Become certified in CPR. Learn life saving skills. The certification can be used with babysitting and other positions requiring this skill. Ages 8 and up, limit of 8. Cost approx. $25

Basic instruction for taking interesting pictures using your own camera. Meetings will focus on taking pictures for fair entries. Field trips may require parents to drive. Some cost involved for film and developing. Meet 5 times. Ages 10 and up

5-H PUPPETRY & MAGIC - Sharon Clay, Leader 462-4518 (Dublin 4-H)
Meet 2 to 3 times a month on weekends in Pleasanton. Will perform puppetry and magic approx. 10 times, as well as at the fair. Project members must commit to full 4-H year. 9 years and up. Approx. cost $20.

5-H.1 SQUARE DANCE - Margaret Miller, Leader 447-6980
Learn basic square dancing and some western dancing. Returning members will learn more advanced calls and additional line dances. This is a county-wide project that is open to entire family. Meets Thursdays, 7:00-9:00pm at Del Valle High, 2253-5th St., Livermore. Cost $10 monthly. All ages.

Learn gun safety, handling and care of firearms. Meet Saturdays or Sundays. Cost per meeting for ammo and range fees. Ages 9 and up.

5-S.2 HUNTER EDUCATION - Neal Kernes, Leader 606-0456
This is a class to learn about hunter education and to receive your certification upon successful completion of the class. The course covers basic gun safety, ethics, morals, conservation, and other related topics needed to pass the state exam. This is a mandatory class for anyone who is interested in hunting and getting their hunting license. No cost. Ages 10 and up (Adults may participate in this class). Limited to 10, but will have a second class if there is demand. Date and time TBA

PLANT SCIENCE

Learn how to plan, plant and raise field and truck crops. We will be working with larger planting of vegetable and other crops. Our goal will be entries in the Agriculture Division of County Fair. Meet Thursdays at 6:00pm and Saturdays at Del Valle High and the farm. Aprox. Cost $50. Limit of 6

Learn gardening basics, including growing herbs and flowers, growing, vegetables, and growing from bulbs.

SOCIAL SCIENCE


8-A BEGINNING 4-H – Need leader
For the first year member: an overview of 4-H, including making items for fair. 4th grade and up

8-A.1 MINI 4-H (GRADES K-3) – Brenda Kernes, Leader 606-0456
A fun introduction to 4-H. Members will sample projects from different areas. Monthly Saturday meetings starting in December. There will be 6 meetings total. Approx. $20 for materials

8-C CITIZENSHIP - Carol Crossett, Leader 510-881-1124
Study leadership and service, history, culture, government, current issues, the citizen’s role, natural resources and human ecosystems, and personal development and responsibilities. County-wide project meets at Farm Bureau Building in Livermore on 3rd Tuesday monthly, 7:00-8.30pm. 7th grade and up.

8-E CREATIVE WRITING - Sharon Clay, Leader 462-4518
Learning different techniques for creative writing. Learn to express yourself through writing.

8-F STATE EXCHANGE - Patrick Colglazier, Leader 510-490-6655
Communicate with 4Hers in other states. Host out-of-state 4Hers (Virginia or Maine this year) one summer and travel to another state (Pennsylvania this year) to stay with 4Hers the next summer. Meet first Friday of each month at 7:00pm, plus some fund raising as a group. Ages 12 and up to host and age 14 and up to travel.

8-J JUNIOR LEADERSHIP – need leader
Project for 6th and 7th graders. Members will be involved in helping project leaders for the 4-H year.

8-J TEEN LEADERSHIP – need leader
Project for 8th graders and above. Will be either main project leaders or assistant project leaders. You will meet with Leadership leader during the year, and attend one county level leadership meeting. Plus county requirements (if aim is camp leadership).

8-J.1 CAMP ACADEMY - Carol Crossett, Leader 510-881-1124
For members who wish to be camp staff members (9th grade and above must be on staff to attend 4-H camp). Meet once monthly. 8th grade and up. 9th graders and above need to note that attendance at Camp Academy and completing requirements does not ensure you will be on staff or able to attend camp.

Learn about your family tree, ancestors and relatives. Ages 12 and up

Advance in 4-H; earn your Star Ranks! Prepare a 4-H presentation, including title card and posters, in time for Presentation Day. Meet weekday evenings, 4th grade and up.
