4-H is a community of youth across
America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. The University of California Cooperative Extension in
cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, and
Alameda County sponsor the local 4-H Youth Program. 4-H is a
co-educational program available for youth aged 5-18. 4-H
serves urban and rural families. The program's goals are to
help youth develop into responsible and productive adults
through the development and support of leadership teams of
youth, adult volunteers and staff who organize educational
project experiences in community based settings. Youth can
become involved in learning new skills though specific
projects. They can expand their leadership roles and
independent thinking skills through committee work, project
leadership and special teen leadership projects while
working with a diverse community of youth and adults.
Opportunities in 4-H:
4-H Project Groups provide
the main source of activity for youth. Projects are designed
so that youth “Learn by Doing” and youth enroll in
activities that interest them. Projects offered include both
animal and non-animal learning experiences. Local 4-H Club
projects offered are dependent on adult volunteer leaders
and may include Drama, Photography, Sewing, Crochet,
Knitting, Scrap Booking, Gardening, Horse, Swine, Sheep,
Beef, Cats, Rabbits, Poultry and more. Member's may also
join county-wide projects such as State Exchange,
Citizenship and Square Dancing.
How To Get Involved: The 4-H Club serving Castro Valley, San Leandro and
Hayward is Redwood 4-H. Monthly Redwood 4-H Community Club
Meetings occur September through June on the second
Thursdays of the month at 7pm. See Contacts/Links for
all Alameda County Clubs.
Join the Fun By Joining 4-H!
A small fee (approximately $15) is charged
each year to join 4-H. This covers group accident insurance
and printing costs. Some projects may incur additional costs
for materials. A local and county newsletter is distributed
to all registered members.
