CLUB NEWS

Briones 4-H

Community Service submitted by Karen Luckhurst

Briones forgot to let you all know what happened on Valentines Day.  Paul Bailey and  Jacob, Connor and Seth Kozlowski, went to the Veterans Hospital in Martinez.  They handed out over 100 red carnations to the patients there.  The boys had a great time doing this and they visited with some of the men there. Some were very interesting and full of history. They loved being remembered and asked the boys to come back and visit any time.  It was a very rewarding experience.

UCD Sheep Barn Tour submitted by Helen Compton

On Sunday, March 13 the Briones Sheep Group and several other 4-H clubs went to the UC Davis sheep barns for their annual tour. We learned a lot about selection, showmanship, and taking care of our lambs. First we went through the barn, which had all of the brand new lambs in it. Then, we went through the second barn that had all of the older lambs and sheep in it. Our tour guides were UC Davis students who live in special dorm rooms in the barns. We even got a chance to practice showmanship with the lambs there. It was a lot of fun.

Pleasant Hill 4-H

Community Service submitted by Donna Rammell

The Pleasant Hill 4-H club has done a couple of community service projects this year. They include working at the Contra Costa Food Bank where the club helped to sort food, box and package for shipping to various agencies throughout the county. Also, we make cash and food donations consisting of canned and dry goods at monthly meetings.

In April the club will be helping with a walkathon at Heather Farms Park to help raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of America. We will assist with setting up booths and registration for the events which are expected to last all day.

Goat Project  submitted by Kaylynn Rammell

We have 4 young pygmy goats at Borges Ranch. Their names are Rain, Midnight, Riot and Garth, Garth is actually the oldest one. Our Pleasant Hill goat project has recently gotten together at Borges Ranch and gave each of the goats a shot that would protect them from tetnus and overeating. The small group of us also trimmed the goats hooves so they don’t develop hoof problems in the future. Everyday one of the project members goes up to the ranch and cleans the goat pen and feeds them grass, hay and their favorite, goat chow. At other meetings, which are usually held on Sunday afternoon, the goat owners and other members round up the pygmies and take them for a walk in the beautiful Mt. Diablo hills. During the summer after the normal 4-H season is over, we take the goats out to the Contra Costa County Youth Fair and show the goats in showmanship and conformation shows. Most of our members have done this before so they are in the more competitive advanced group but they still have fun. This will be the group members had older pygmies that are now retired in an old apple tree pasture in Grass Valley. So it will be exciting to see how the smaller does will react to all the constant action.
