Hydesville has many opportunities to learn. Here are some of
our Projects.
 | Computers
This year’s computer
skills leader is Tim. This is his second year as the computer
leader. Last year we had lots of fun learning new things and we hope
to have as much fun this year. Tim is very knowledgeable and will
teach us interesting facts that you wouldn't expect to know. He
teaches us stuff about things we need to know for buying software. We
get to work on this website, which we hope you are enjoying. We have
lots of fun working on it and putting it together. Thank you for
visiting our site, we hope it was helpful to you.

 | Golf
Hydesville 4-H has a great group. We have lots of fun
learning new things about golf. For our first meeting we went to
Redwood Empire Golf and Country Club in Fortuna. We each went to
hit a bucket of range balls. Range balls are a bucket of golf
balls that you hit in a place designed to practice on your swing.
We learned how you should dress and act when on a golf course.
We also practiced on how to get your ball out of sand. We would
use our sand wedge for this. After that we went to the practice
putting green. We practiced putting for a while then had a
putting competition. On another meeting we learned about
penalties, rules, and about etiquette on the course. Our group
is so much fun, people from other clubs wants to join our group.
We would like to thank Mike for volunteering to be our golf leader.
He has had fun meetings and we hope that he is the leader again next
year.

 | Sewing
Have you ever wanted to
sew, but not have the right tutorage to make anything worth keeping?
Well this sewing group can provide you with the techniques you need!
Your will be sent out to
find some material you would like to use and will be told to buy a
certain amount. Then at the meeting, voila! You are ready to sew!
The teacher will have a
pattern she wants to use and she will walk you through the process. In
the end you could end up with a new apron!

 | Sheep - Who is the best Sheep leader of them all?
Why, Jon, of course! Here's a photo of Jon and some members of
his Sheep group. |

Swine
What would you
do at Hydesville's swine meeting?
 | Discuss which type of food is best for your pig |
 | Talk about what kind of shelter you need for your pig |
 | Discuss how to strengthen your pigs' muscles |
Well, consider this, if you decided to raise a pig, what would you
feed it? You might consider feeding it scraps from the table. But what
if you don't have any scraps? You'll want to buy a formula feed for
your pig. But which formula is best for your pig? Well, you join 4-H's
swine group to find out. These pigs will be shown for market so you'll
want something that would help build muscle. Fortuna Feed would tell
you that either Showtime or Showchow (both made by Purina) would be
the best. A&L would also recommend Purina; first the starter, then the
grower, and finally the finisher. To learn more about pig food consult
with your leader. Having water constantly available is also important.
We've fixed the problem of what to feed your pig, now how do you
shelter your pig? You'll want to get some Hog Wire that come in panels
of 16ft long and 32-42in tall. You hold that down by an anchor post.
You want an enclosed area, so no draft comes in because pigs get
pneumonia very easily. The are for one pig has to be at least 15' by
15'(225 sq. ft.)
How do we build up our pigs' muscle? You can elevate both the food
and the water, and build steps so the pig has to climb up the steps to
eat and drink. Don't let it escape the pen, though. It is suggested
that you walk your pig 20 minutes per day.
Here is something you can mull over. "Swine are the most unusual
domesticated breed of animals. There is evidence to suggest that they
were domesticated seven separate times. As a result, swine go feral
faster than any other animal that man cares for." |
 | Rabbit- What would you
like to know about rabbits? This is a photo of a Hydesville
4-Her with her first place rabbit. |

 | Goat (Dairy)
Rhonda is our
dairy goat leader..
The domestic goat or Capra Aegagrus Hircus is a
domesticated subspecies of the wild goat found in southwest Asia and
eastern Europe. The goat is a part of the bovine family, and is
related to the sheep. Domestic goats are one of the oldest species
that have been domesticated. For hundreds of years, goats have been
used for their meat, milk, skin, and hair all over the world. Female
goats are referred to as does or nannies. Intact males are known as
bucks and billies, while offspring are called kids. Castrated goats
are called wethers.

 | Horse -Horse In our horse group we have had one meeting so far. We talked
about our ambitions for this year. At our next meeting we are going to
have a vet come out and vaccinate our horses. We are also going to
practice halter showmanship. |
We participate in a summer horse camp at Cuneo Creek. The camp is
open to anybody in 4-H. You don't even have to own a horse!{ Although
it is preferred.} In most cases the camp lasts around five days. You
camp out in tents {or trailers if you have them}. The camp cost $50
for the whole time, including your food. They provide breakfast,
lunch, and dinner. All of these meals are very nutritious. They also
include a vegetarian meal for others.
Last year we had a chiropractor come out and do a demonstration on
" how to detect if a horse is having back, hip, shoulders..ect
problems."
We also had a Parelli demonstration. She did an excellent job
teaching us all about Parelli. We even got to get our own horses out
and practice while she was giving us tips. We can't wait to go this
summer!
