Developing Young Scientists
After school program staff can weave science experiences into almost any activity. Finding ways to
encourage children to question and explore their world creates the basis for science learning. The Y.E.S. teachers teach the children and encourage them to communicate, organize, compare, and observe.
Specific Tasks of the Teen Teachers
The teen teachers first attend a 10-hour training.
They meet with the site team every week to plan
for the sessions and teach hands-on activities to the students every week. After the teaching session, the
teens meet with the coach to evaluate their job done so they can improve in later sessions.
Specific Tasks of the Y.E.S. Coaches
The coaches work with the teens and makes sure that the needed materials are at the site.
The adult coaches attend the weekly sessions at school and support the teens as teachers. They
meet regularly with the Y.E.S. Project Coordinator to assess progress. The adults train the teens and
evaluate the teen teachers' jobs done at the end of every weekly teaching session.
