Los Gatos 4-H Club (chartered circa1964) is a part of the Santa Clara County 4-H program within the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program and serves the cities of Los Gatos, Saratoga, Monte Sereno, Campbell, and West San Jose.
The club meets on the 1st Monday of each month from September to June at NeverNeverLand, behind Los Gatos High School. Club meetings start at 7 PM and last about an hour and a half. They are run by elected youth officers.
Projects are led by teen leaders or parent volunteers. Project meetings are usually held once a month and run 1-2 hours. Between project meetings, members may spend additional time working on their project. The amount of time depends on the project and the member's level of interest.
Currently, projecs associated with the Los Gatos 4-H Club include cooking, photography, arts & crafts, biking, hiking, bee keeping, ceramics, leathercraft and communications. Members may also participate in projects offered by other clubs within the county. In addition, all Los Gatos 4-H members participate in ongoing community service projects.
Members are expected to attend all general club meetings, all meetings of their projects, and to notify the leader if they are unable to attend.
For the 2005-2006 program year, enrollment fees are $25 for members and $10 for adult volunteers. Some projects have an additional fee for supplies. This covers the cost of insurance, a county newsletter, and other incidentals. Members may enroll in as many projects as they choose and may participate in an animal project without owning an animal. While we welcome members any time during the year, our regular enrollment is held in August and September. The program year runs from September through June, with other activities (such as county camp and the county fair) held in the summer months.
There are a number of county, sectional, state, and national 4-H events and competitions that members may do. The most popular county events include the Santa Clara County Fair, County 4-H Council, Presentation Day, Favorite Foods day, 4-H Summer Camp, and Leadership Overnight.
For questions, or to join the Los Gatos 4-H Club, please contact one of the community club leaders: Kristine Jensen at 408.358.4219, or Karen Pruitt at 408.374.3873.
4-H is an international organization for youth, 5-19 years old, that promotes hands-on learning and is based on parent and volunteer participation. 4-H welcomes all youth (and adult volunteers) from all backgrounds in all locales (rural and urban).
