treasurer report
president's report
Fair wrap-up:
Bob Towle: The Large Animals did not seem to be too bothered by the fireworks.
All went well.
John Haggerty: Small Animals also went well. No pygmy goat judge showed up,
though. It seemed cooler in the tents this year. They were set up higher than
last year's tents.
General consensus was that the 4-H Information Booth was a success -> it was
well run, and it will be well worth the effort to do it again next Fair.
The lack of advertising prior to the fair was obvious in its absence.
There were very few stills exhibits this year. Need to think of ways to
stimulate these types of exhibits within the clubs.
Many people complained about the lack of the printed Fair entry book. A
suggestion was made that the individual clubs should be responsible for printing
copies as needed.
Food Booth: The food service that operated out of our food booth this year
should be paying our fee to the Fair Management Corporation. This means that we
(SCC4H Club Council) should be getting the $1500 fee reimbursed to us.
There has been general relief that we were not responsible for running the food
booth this year.
A suggestion was made to make the operation and coordination a Junior
Achievement Project.
Another suggestion was made that the individual clubs should submit plans as to
how each club would replace the funds that the food booth usually generates for
the Council.
Fair Awards: Everyone seems happy as to the awards ceremony and the awards
themselves. Sponsors need recognition - personal letters and an item in the TT
recognizing the corporate sponsors.
The Avian Bowl at Fair was a big hit.
This year's County Achievement Night will be September 27 at Westhope Church.
If any 4-H groups are planning to use any of the Fairgrounds facilities for
meetings this fall, please give Lonnie T. a call.
The Orientation meetings for the delegates for the California Technology
Conference, the Youth Leadership Summit, and the State Leadership Conference had
been held. Delegates to the CTC committed to going to the various clubs around
the county to help them set up web sites. The YLS delegates were supposed to
follow up on their action plan developed at the YLS. SLC attendees were to
provide educational sessions at County Leadership Overnight, and to develop and
run a one day leadership conference for the 6th graders in the county.
At the conferences, some of the youth suggested to the State 4-H staff that the
volunteer leaders (the adults) should be trained to help make sure that they
don't intervene inappropriately when advising the youth leaders in a project
setting.
Some counties have created levels of awards that go beyond the bronze, silver
and gold star ranking, to provide some level of goal setting for youth members
who attain the gold star rank fairly early in their 4-H career.
Due to the number of attendees to the state level conferences this year, the
total outlay from the County Council was over the $2500 limit previously set.
There was a motion, seconded and carried to increase the funding level to $2944
this year.
It was noted by our treasurer that next year Council may need to reduce
expectations of conference attendees for reimbursement by Council, since we have
no food booth income this year, and the normally substantial bequests that the
Council receives have been nearly cut in half this year, largely due to the
stock market down turn.
There are still 6 50% scholarships available from the County Extension office
for first time attendees to the State Leaders Forum at Asilomar this year.
The Western Regional Leaders Forum will be held in Alaska at the end of
February, 2004. In 2005, the WRLF will be held in Sacramento.
Deborah Lang, Key Leader:
Club enrollments were due at the end of June. Only one has been completed as of
12 Aug.
Dates have been set for Community Club Leader training and for Project Leader
orientation and training.
County Web site:
We will move the county web pages onto the state supplied server. Individual
club web pages could be hosted there as sub webs as well.
Nominating committee:
Bob Towle has agreed to continue as Large Animal Project Area Coordinator. He
has some new leaders for the various projects: Dairy goat Leader will be Tammy
Stone and Sheep Leader will be Sarah Fontana. There will be a Market Goat
category at the Fair next year. Bob also announced the planning phase of a joint
FFA/4-H Large Animal Field Day again next year. First planning meeting will be 7
pm on September 24th at Prush Park.
John Haggerty announced that the new Poultry Leader will be Louise Helland.
John asked the Executive board to think about nominations for Vice President
very carefully. Vicky Bosworth has indicated that this will be her last year as
President, and the Vice President position would be a good training position for
someone who would be willing to step up to the presidency next summer.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:15 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Gary R. Lang
Secretary
