Key Leader
2002 Fair Review
The 2002 Santa Clara County Fair faced some definite challenges. Contracts were not allowed to be signed until after March 1st, which impacted vendors and judges. In addition there was a reduced budget and a reduction in staff. However, this year's Fair can be deemed a success with 106,044 counted through the gates. The vendors were very happy. Because buildings were not booked before fair, staff had time to do repairs. The future looks like a continuation of the three-day fair for the next several years. FYI, here are some issues addressed:
1. The porta-a-potty vendor failed to do any service on Sunday, and therefore will not be back next year.
2. The wheelchair/stroller vendor failed to show and will be replaced.
3. The parking vendor was late installing fencing and did not provide handicapped parking, both will be fixed for next year.
4. Front to back access will be corrected for next year and the carnival will be spread out. The Ferris wheel will be kept as the centerpiece.
5. Signage was built to hang on buildings, but with no buildings, no signs. Poles will be made to hang signs.
6. Looking for incentives for stills exhibitors: perhaps getting a store to sponsor gift certificates as premiums.
7. Want to improve livestock security.
8. Will work with San Jose Police to improve access.
9. Issues with maps, phones and stage access to be addressed.
Other news:
*Willing to provide flyer to vendors and volunteers for 4H Food Booth for Monday-Thursday; encouraged delivery.
*Should have draft of book ready in October for review. Hope to have completed and posted on the web site by January 15th.
* Date set for 2003: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, August 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Livestock same as this year.
