Santa Clara County's Annual 4-H Fashion Revue 2005
Fashion Revue Survey Results Back to Home The Fashion Revue is held to help 4-H members gain self-confidence and poise. Participants are able to model their project accomplishments and show their garments to the judges in a poised and postured manner. In many counties throughout California, the participation level has decreased. The goal of this survey is to give counties the tools, knowledge and resources to plan a Fashion Revue. Have fun planning a creative and successful Fashion Revue!

The survey was conducted between the dates of May 8, and June 18, 2004. The counties that participated in the Fashion Revue Survey were: (Counties that are joined together represent Bi-County Fashion Revues.) North:

1. How many people participated in your County Fashion Revue?
The counties are averaged together by section. To get a better scope of 4-H Fashion Revue participation in rural areas as compared to urban the average of participants in these areas are included. 2. Has there been an increase or decrease in number of participants in the last three years? The increases/decreases are averaged by Sections and compiled into percentages. The percentages represent California over the last three years. Increase: 26% of the counties had an increase Same: 18% of the counties had no fluctuations Decrease: 56% of the counties had a decrease
3. Does your section hold a Sectional Fashion Revue?

4. How do you encourage or promote the County Fashion Revue? North:· Meet with all Home EC Leaders and hold a Home EC Day· Hold a party for all who participated after the Fashion Revue · Send a packet to clubs explainng Fashion Revue, including scoring sheets · Promote the Fashion Revue to the quilt and the clover projects North Central: · Hold county-wide sewing classes in a public building. · Hold Fashion Show for the County Council or other major county events · Get a list of sewing members from county office · Hold another sewing competition. For example: The Design Contest, which the chairperson chooses a pattern and everyone in the county changes or embellishes it in some way to fit their own style. The participant can enter what they made in the Fashion Revue, too. (Contact Santa Clara County for more information.) · Contact various fabric and sewing companies to ask for donations for contestants and judges (Santa Clara Co.) · Encourage grandparents, relatives, and classmates to attend the Fashion Revue to discover what 4-H has to offer within the sewing project. South: · Encourage through sewing leaders, flyers, county newsletter, and letters to clubs · Hold a workshops twice a year and offer to come to club meetings to do a Fashion Show · Encourage sewing members to do presentations, be an M.C., and be on the Fashion Revue committee South Central: · Workshop on Fashion Revue at Presentation Day · Encourage through a newspaper article, and make telephone calls to sewing leaders · Encourage event as an Emerald Star project · Have the All-Stars run the Fashion Revue · Send information to project leaders such as crafts, quilting etc. · Give a short talk at the County Council meeting; encourage through a web newsletter · Have a poster contest to see who could make the best Fashion Revue poster or program cover 5. Do you hold any special classes (other than basic sewing lessons) to help the girls prepare for the Fashion Revue? North: · The teen leaders hold grooming and modeling classes · The teen leaders demonstrate how to model before the Fashion Show · Hold special classes on embellishment, trims, and accessories · Workshops on nail and hair care North Central: · Fashion Revue Workshop · A modeling class that is mandatory · A commentary card class that is mandatory · A field trip to a modeling agency South: · Hold a meeting with the judges to go over protocol · Go to a store to try on fashion styles to see what might look good on a person South Central: · Hold a Clothing Expo on modeling, skill, fashion and knowledge
6. Did you do any special programs or projects during your contest? North: · A People’s Choice award for the Best Outfit · Fruit sculptures · Arts and Crafts class · Table displays and commodity contests · Hold a drawing for all who enter and have games · Hold a dinner with Fashion Revue as program event (Shasta Co.) · Display of the Decades – make a display showing all the different styles from the past (Sutter/Yuba Co.) · Judging Contests · Commentating and modeling · Home EC Day – table settings, educational videos, a sewing game, food classes and making bread North Central: · Guest speaker on interfacing and zippers · Model at club meetings after Fashion Revue · Quilting project during event · At Sectional, have the cooking project prepare lunch for participants to purchase · Combine Spring Fling with Fashion Revue (Sonoma Co.) · Have project competitions and quizzes · Have a sewing community service project during the Fashion Revue to keep the participants busy, (i.e. baby blankets, bags, Caps for Cancer, Project Linus - an organization that donates blankets to needy children. Contact at www.projectlinus.org). Also, have a committee team put on a demonstration to explain the steps. Encourage a 4-H'er who wants to receive a star to do the demonstration. · To encourage the participants to get to know one another hold a Fashion Revue Ice Breaker questionnaire (Santa Clara Co.) South: · Separate the Fashion Revue into two days; 1st day – judging portion; 2nd day - awards if held during county fair · Make paper sun hats and have door prizes and gifts (Ventura Co.) · Have presentations (i.e. smocking, quilting, appliqués, etc.) · Combine events such as Fun with Food or Favorite Foods Day with Fashion Revue South Central: · Origami · Modeling Contest · Hold judging classes · Hold a themed Fashion Revue (i.e. garments had to be blue, make something out of Hawaiian fabric) (Contact Mariposa County) · Have a special project for Clover members include those not in sewing project to come · Give a Fashion Show at a retirement home

North: · Crafts – quilts or pillows · What’s your pleasure (purchased) · Anything goes (Clover category) · Knitted items North Central:· Decorated T-shirt – theme picked by contest chairperson · Recycled - garment is reconstructed to make a new outfit, has to be at least 60% recycled · Purchased Category - contestant buys and coordinates a complete outfit with the budget of $150. South: · Embellishment/Wearable Art · Costume · Non-sewn decorated item · Doubled Up – take one pattern and make two different outfits (Judge on construction) (San Diego County) · Quilting South Central: · Wool and Cotton categories (Merced County) · Accessories Category · International Clothing (Merced County) · Crocheted · Home Sewn (only part of the outfit has to be sewn, the rest is purchased) · Hawaiian Category · Color themes
8. Do you have any suggestions on how to improve a Fashion Revue? North: · Hold a noon Tea Party and feed the judges lunch · Have a sewing machine donated and a scholarship fund donate something · Top winner is judged on modeling and standing in front of judges; the winner receives a quilt rack · Ask a fashion business to come in a give tips and presentations · Incorporate Food Fiesta with Fashion Revue · Hold a State Fashion Revue · Shorten the Fashion Revue · Model at the mall after the Fashion Revue · Have clothing judged on construction · Every member gets 1 yard of cotton fabric, and a goody bag · Council buys awards and have medallist awards · Hold a barbeque · Winners in all categories receive scissors · Purchased and Recycled Winners receive a sewing book North Central: · Pre-read commentary cards and have a commentary workshop · Give guidelines to judges before contest date · Check dates with county to see if any other 4-H event is happening that same day · Bring table games · Play music during modeling · Make a program with details on event times, contestant's name and club, list chairpersons, judges and companies or individuals that have donated anything · Try on clothes at stores for the latest style South: · Senior winner receives a sewing machine · Hold an outdoor Spring Tea · Have more demonstrations and community service projects · Invite the Quilters’ Guild and recruit sewing leaders from community South Central: · Have the sewing projects advertise · Promote to non-sewers about categories and activities · Hold hair and makeup classes · Have the judges ready beforehand and have them know the safety and construction involved · Give a booklet about the Fashion Revue to sewing leaders · Hold a BI-County Fashion Revue for those who do not want hold it in their county · Have a Fashion Show at Fair – go to different buildings and model · Get the younger girls involved
