Our Rabbit/Cavy project is mostly focused on learning showmanship. Some members enter  shows to show off their cavies/rabbits and earn awards which represent the health, beauty and natural markings for the breed.  Many awards are won.

You do not have to own an animal but everyone that join eventually does. They are easy to board at home which may be more inviting than the logistics of a large animal. We have many members that show their rabbits and cavies (guinea pigs) at the fair. The Santa Clara County Fair is the ultimate show for the kids.

  • You must show your own animal for this event.

  • Kids 7 to 8 can do showmanship non-competitively. (The younger kids are not usually ready.)

  • Ages 9 to 13 start as beginners and move up to novice and advanced depending on their showmanship skills.

  • Ages 14 - 18 start as novice.

The showmanship builds confidence and teaches the kids the importance of presenting themselves in a clean and well groomed manner.  The kids need to learn the facts on proper care, common ailments, body parts and what may be considered a fault or disqualification when judged.  This is part of the showmanship skill.

Our meetings are generally on Tuesday nights once a month.  As it gets closer to fair we add a few extra meetings to better prepare the kids for showmanship.
