4-H is an international organization for youth, 5-19 years old, that promotes hands-on learning and is based on parent and volunteer participation. The 4-H program in the United States is administered through county Cooperative Extension offices, land grant colleges in each state, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and a variety of volunteer councils at the county, state, and national levels.4-H welcomes all youth (and adult volunteers) from all backgrounds in all locales (rural and urban).
4-H Clubs are one of the most popular and visible parts of the overall 4-H program. A 4-H Club is run by youth with the help of one or more adult advisors. The Club usually has one meeting a month where all members attend. This meeting is run by elected club officers and covers general club business.
Each Club offers one or more projects. Projects are at the heart of 4-H's hands-on-learning approach. Each project focuses on a topic -- anything from sewing to car maintenance to rocket science. Projects are taught by older youth and/or adult volunteers and generally meet one or more times a month. For more information about 4-H please visit 4H4U.org.
The Rolling Hills of Cupertino 4-H Club (founded in October 1971) is a part of the Santa Clara County 4-H program within the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program and primarily serves the cities of Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Mountain View, and Campbell.Club members meet monthly at Monta Vista Recreation Center at the corner of Foothill and Voss Avenues in Cupertino. The monthly general meetings start at 6:30 p.m. and end no later than 8:00 p.m. on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Club meetings are run by elected youth officers and include games, food, and other fun activities.
The club currently offers the following projects: Beekeeping, Camping, Cavy, Clothing, Computers, Dairy Goat, Market Goat, Pygmy Goat, Dog Care, Entomology, Foods, Gardening, Hawaiian Quilting, Leadership, Photography, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep, Swine, Woodworking, and others. Projects are led by parents or older teens. Project meetings are usually held once a month and run 1-2 hours.
The club is lucky to have its own farm leased from the City of Cupertino and located at McClellan Ranch Park. The farm can accommodate steer, sheep, pigs, goats, rabbits, and chickens. Members who wish to raise animals at the farm sign an agreement and pay a monthly rental fee.
Yearly enrollment fees are $9.00 per member, $6.50 per leader, plus $20.00 per family. Members may enroll in as many projects as they choose without additional cost (except for supplies for some projects and an extra $2.50/year for the horse project). Members may enroll and participate in an animal project without owning an animal. While we welcome members any time during the year, our regular enrollment is held in August and September. The program year runs September through June, with many other activities (such as camp and the county fair) held in the summer months.
Members are expected to attend all general club meetings, all meetings of their projects, and to notify the leader if they are unable to attend.
There are a number of county, sectional, state, and national events and competitions that members may do. The most popular Santa Clara County events include the county fair, county council, presentation day, favorite foods day, summer camp, and leadership overnight. Some events require a uniform consisting of white pants and shirt with 4-H hat and 4-H tie ($7/each).
