Frequently Asked Questions
Question: How old does my child have to be before he/she can
join 4-H?
Answer: Members must be at least five years old. Participation in
projects before the age of 9 is limited to small animal projects such as
guinea pigs and rabbits. Projects that are non-animal based are open to
youth of all ages.
Question: How do I get an enrollment form?
Answer: Request an online enrollment form from Club
Leader Jill Willard at
jetwillard@sbcglobal.net. Along with the enrollment form will be details
about the projects available, the modest membership fee, where to return
the completed forms and payment for membership, projects still available
to join and an invitation to join the club's Yahoo! group site where
lots of helpful club information is available for viewing and
downloading.
Question: What kinds of activities are available for youth to
join within the club?
Answer: Rolling Hills 4H boasts several
"projects" for youth to join each year. Projects are led by an adult
volunteer and often assisted by youth Teen and Junior leaders who are
building planning, communication and teamwork skills along the way.
Projects tend to meet monthly as a group for about 60-90 minutes,
include an aspect of education about the project topic and may include
field trips and event attendance like shows and fairs throughout the
year. Examples of projects include crocheting, poultry/waterfowl, dairy
goats, rabbits, dog care and training, clothing, mini horses and
beekeeping, to name a few. In addition to club projects (and we
participate in projects hosted by nearby 4H clubs like El Sereno and
Homesteaders as well to broaden the project offerings), youth are
invited to participate in many community service projects and leadership
and presentation skills throughout the year. Every summer, youth are
eligible to attend summer camp for a week, too! The Santa Clara County
Fair offers the chance to meet up with members from other 4H clubs and
to show off what youth have learned about animal knowledge and
showmanship and to view the works and accomplishments of others within
4H.
Question: How can parents of youth become involved in 4H?
Answer: 4H is volunteer driven. Its existence depends
heavily on adult volunteers. Adult volunteers lead projects, coordinate
fund raisers, manage paperwork, do construction at our ranch, mow the
lawn, chaperone 4H events where youth are present, manage activities
such as t-shirt orders, 4H cap and scarf orders, coordinate our annual
"Adopt a Family" activity over the holiday season - to list a few. Some
parents "job share" with others which distributes the work and the
reduces the time commitment. Additional opportunities within 4H exist at
the county, sectional, state and national levels. There is no shortage
of chances to participate and contribute to 4H as an adult volunteer!
And, it's a great way to remain in step with your kids as they grow up
in an organization focused on teaching life skills and giving them
chances to apply them all year long.
